Success Stories

James & the Giant Peach, Charlotte’s Web, and The Wizard of Oz are among the books that Ping Wu has been enjoying with her tutor for the past year as she improves her English grammar, vocabulary, and conversational skills. When she came to the United States from Hunan province in China about 4 years ago, Ping couldn’t communicate in English, and she found daily life in Baltimore to be very difficult. She found the Greater Homewood ESOL program and started taking classes. About a year ago, she was matched with a new volunteer tutor, Vernon George. Now she can chat with the customers at her husband’s Charles Village restaurant and is prepared to help her 4 year-old son when he enters kindergarten. She also feels confident using English in her everyday life. She feels very lucky to have been matched with Vernon, whose dedication she admires and who she finds to be patient and kind, as well as an excellent teacher who can work at just the right level to allow her to improve.
