Adult Literacy Program

The Need

An estimated 38% of Baltimore City’s adult population lack basic literacy skills.

Without significant reading and communication skills, adults are less able to obtain and succeed in their jobs, help their families and communities, and participate in their children’s growth and schooling.

Overview

The Adult Literacy Program provides quality learner-centered instruction through classes and one-to-one tutoring to promote literacy – including reading, writing, and math – generally up to a Pre-GED level. We work with adults aged 16 and older in classes, and 18 and above in one-to-one tutoring. Trained volunteer tutors meet with individual learners at least two hours per week on a flexible schedule.
