GHCC's Youth Programs

Central to strengthening neighborhoods is the safety and support provided to young people.  GHCC's Youth Programs work to increase the accessibility and availability of educational, recreational, and enrichment activities for youth ages 11 to 16 who live within Greater Homewood's footprint.

Of the 11,000 young people under age 18 who live in Greater Homewood, approximately 7,500 of them come from neighborhoods where poverty and its effects are endemic.  Because GHCC believes that all young people deserve a great school, a vibrant neighborhood, and access to enrichment programs that build skills for academic success, we work to ensure that economic circumstances are no factor in a young person's ability to gain a quality education and acquire the skills they need to be successful individuals and leaders in their communities.

Since 2000, GHCC's Youth Programs increased the availability of positive activities for Greater Homewood youth by building partnerships between schools, communities, and youth service providers to foster an integrated approach to meeting youth needs.  GHCC's established repuation as an intermediary enables our program to serve as a networking resource to promote common solutions.  Our current range of programming works with local youth providers and institutional partners to facilitate cross-sector collaborations and coordinated efforts to maximize and expand the reach of programs for underserved youth.

Our Programs

  • YouthWorks. Since 2006, GHCC has placed teenagers from the Baltimore City YouthWorks program in meaningful job placements with our business, faith-based, and school-based partners.
  • COACH Baltimore. To provide youth in our neighborhoods with increased access to high quality college preparatory services in the fall of 2008, GHCC launched the College Opportunity and Career Help (COACH) program.
  • Youth Leadership Mentoring. To increase youth-led civic engagement, we promote the Youth as Resources Grant opportunity with all of our neighborhoods, schools, and youth provider partners.  In the 2009-2010 school year, GHCC is the fiscal sponsor for two Youth as Resources grant recipients: the Baltimore City College Environmental Club and the Guilford Middle School's National Academic League, "The Genius Movement."
  • Remington Art Camp. Through a partnership with the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Masters of Arts in Community Arts (MACA), and the Church of the Guardian Angel, the Margaret Brent and Youth VISTAs coordinate this important summer camp for Remington youth.
  • Baltimore Tennis Patrons Summer Camp. Since 2002, GHCC has facilitated free summer tennis camps for youth in our neighborhoods in partnership with the Baltimore Tennis Patrons, which serve approximately 200 youth in Greater Homewood.
