Classes and Registration

Overview

Professional teachers lead morning and evening classes two days a week for three hours a day. Classes are scheduled over four cycles a year, generally from July through August (eight-week summer term); late September to mid-December (twelve-week fall term); January to March (ten-week winter term); and April to late June (ten-week spring term).

Most classes are held at the Program’s offices at 3501 N. Charles Street, in the lower level of the University Baptist Church; directions can be found here.

We have satellite class partnerships with Marian House in Better Waverly, the Episcopal Refugee and Immigrant Center Alliance (ERICA), Esperanza Center in Fells Point, the Hampden Family Center, SEIU, the Furman Templeton Elementary Judy Center, and the Barclay Greenmount Apartments in Greenmount West.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes focus on reading and math. Morning groups are usually held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and evening classes from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Reading classes meet Monday and Wednesday, and math classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday. Satellite groups generally study both reading and math.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

English language classes focus on vocabulary development, pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced and English Literacy/Civics groups meet 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for two days a week (Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday).

Workforce Readiness

The six-week “Get That Job!” class introduces learners to the basics of completing applications, writing strong resumes and cover letters, searching for jobs, and successfully interviewing. We regularly invite guest speakers to present on a variety of topics, from conflict mediation to college admissions and financial aid.

Computer Classes

Computer skills are essential for success in life and work.  The Adult Learning Center offers computer classes for learners at the beginning and intermediate levels, which cover topics ranging from beginning keyboard and mouse skills to navigating email and the internet.  Registration for spring 2012 computer classes will be held on Friday, April 27 from 10-11 am or 1-2 pm.  Please see the below flyer for more details:
