GHCC is accepting applications for more than 20 full time 2013-14 AmeriCorps*VISTA members, beginning in July 2013, to serve for a period of one year on projects designed to build organizational capacity and create sustainable solutions to eradicate poverty in Baltimore City and other Maryland communities. The Greater Homewood Adult Learning Center regularly hires for the following part-time teaching positions:

Adult Basic Education Teacher

Description

Part-time openings are available 3 hours a day, 2 days a week for an 8-12 week class term.  Morning classes are typically scheduled from 9:30 am-12:30 pm and evening classes from 6-9 pm, though hours may vary.  Contractual employment includes additional paid time for training/professional development.

Primary duties include leading small group instruction in math and/or reading and writing, as well as assisting with learner needs and goal identification, implementation of standards-based instruction, and completion of required documentation on learner outcomes.

Requirements

  • B.A./B.S. degree required
  • ABE/GED teaching experience preferred
  • Familiarity with basic literacy and math instruction
  • Sensitivity to adult learners’ needs

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Teacher

Description

The Adult Learning Center provides ESOL classes to adult learners from a variety of cultural backgrounds at the literacy, beginning, and intermediate levels.  Classroom instruction is based on learners’ needs, skill levels, and the Core ESL Content Standards of the Maryland State Department of Education.  Our classes are typically multi-level and we use the CASAS test to evaluate learners’ progress.

Requirements

  • B.A./B.S. in a related field; TESOL Certificate or Master’s degree in TESOL preferred
  • Minimum of one year’s experience teaching ESOL to adults
  • Experience working with adult students from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to teach multi-level classes
  • Organizational skills required to manage and complete administrative paperwork.
