About Us

Welcome to Greater Homewood!

The Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) has been a fixture in north Baltimore for nearly four decades. Founded in 1969, GHCC was established to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live. We serve 40 neighborhoods with more than 70,000 residents – just over 10% of Baltimore city’s population. Our geographic boundaries are extensive: the county line on the north, just below North Avenue to our south, along the Jones Falls on the west, and along York Road and Hillen Parkway, including Ednor Gardens and Better Waverly, to the east.

GHCC fulfills its mission to strengthen neighborhoods in north central Baltimore by improving education, supporting youth development, and advancing economic development and community revitalization by managing three core programs.

Our Public Education program builds a school’s assets by convincing business and community partners to invest in a school environment that welcomes and serves the whole community. We also operate Civic Venture’s Experience Corps Program for Baltimore City, which places trained adults over age 55 in Pre-K to 3rd grade classrooms to assist principals and teachers in their day-to day activities.

Our Neighborhood and Economic Development strategies include targeting private and public investment, improving the commercial corridors through façade upgrades, coordinating strategic code enforcement, presenting public safety education programs, supporting greening and cleaning projects, and making acquisition and rehab loans accessible through Baltimore’s Healthy Neighborhoods and the Maryland Community Legacy Program.

Our Adult Literacy and ESOL program offers free instruction in basic reading, writing, math, and English skills through classes and one-to-one tutoring. Immigrant and international learners are taught fluency, pronunciation, and vocabulary development.

We are optimistic about the continued revitalization of Baltimore City. We work on the front line and see the signs of neighborhood revitalization – even in the poorest communities – every day. We see hope and commitment for change and improvements; we see residents getting involved and connecting with their neighbors. Please join us by lending your time as a volunteer or making a donation to support the vital work we are engaged in to make all the neighborhoods within Greater Homewood good places to live, work, and grow.
